During the past decade, the traditional commercial gallery sector has been in the mode of ‘recalibrate or close up shop’. Equally, the ARI – the independent, artist-run experimental space – has fallen under the pressure of rental hikes through city gentrification and big developers, rending many closed. With art fairs and online selling sites finally nestled in as the norm, the thought of opening an art gallery is both a risky and slightly nostalgic option.
