In 2013, Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg wrote Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, a manifesto encouraging women not to ‘lean out’ of their careers while having children. While the book received mixed responses – from stereotyped attacks on working mothers to criticism of Sandberg’s privilege- it coined the phrase ‘lean in’ to characterise continuing drive for career progression.
