Village Cinemas has launched its inaugural film competition, Unscene with the invitation ‘Make a film for your future’.

In partnership with Open Channel, Victoria’s not-for-profit screen resource and networking organisation for early career filmmakers, the major exhibitor is calling for entries from emerging filmmakers and students to produce a compelling short film of up to five minutes.

The competition will provide a new thematic stimulus each year. This year the theme is piracy and the competition asks filmmakers to consider how young people in the screen industry are impacted by the infringement of intellectual property.

The choice of piracy as a theme builds from the future-focus of the competition and reflects a need for a conversation on piracy within the film industry and by the people it affects the most.

‘Potentially the community misunderstands that piracy only affects major exhibitors and studios, over the last decade Box Office trends are positive,’ said Nic Robin, Marketing Manager Village Cinemas.

‘What is evident are implications for local filmmakers. I think it is an important message to send to the youth, piracy doesn’t necessarily only impact large players in the market but it absolutely affects the next generation of burgeoning screen creators.’

The Unscene Short Film Competition will not only start this conversation in the next generation of emerging Australian filmmakers, but will also give the finalists an opportunity to showcase their talent and will create a new pathway to kick start their careers.

‘Through our conversations with Open Channel we learned that short film competitions have decreased over the past decade given a significant decrease in government funding. As a major exhibitor we saw an opportunity to do something for the people who matter in our industry.’

The shortlisted finalists will be chosen by their peers through online voting and a panel of industry experts will announce the overall winner in late November at Village Cinemas Rivoli.

The winner will receive a cash prize of $10,000, mentoring from Open Channel, filming equipment, and the opportunity to showcase their talent across cinema pre-show and foyer video walls reaching an audience of up to 12 million people. That’s a lot of eyeballs.
