The registration gap

Only a quarter of architecture graduates gain registration showing even this pragmatic craft has no clear professional pathway.

All Australian states require architects to register before they can describe themselves as architects. But many architecture graduates are pocketing the degree and working in the field without taking the next step that would see them enter the profession.

Recent research has found that the number of architecture graduates far outnumbers the number of registering new architects. A study  by the University of Adelaide’s School of Architecture & Built Environment released in September in Creative Education found that between 1999 and 2011, only 22% of female and 27% of male South Australian graduates had registered as architects.
