As a source of both inspiration and education, the International Film School Sydney(IFSS) has a strong foundation of rearing film talent from its doors. The cinematography curriculum for 2015 will build on these strengths, providing guidance for emerging filmmakers.
Jonathan Wald, Head of Film at IFSS said that the 2015 cinematography curriculum will evolve mirroring industry trends, in the Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media- Cinematography.
‘The cinematography curriculum at IFSS is always being improved in response to the ever-changing technologies that we are using to create beautiful moving images,’ said Wald.
Students will be using the latest technology, including top-end digital cameras such as the Red Epic, Black Magic Cinema Cameras and Go Pros. With these tools they will cover a diverse range of formats, including film, HDV, 8mm, XDCAM, AVCCAM, 2k, 4k and 5k digital in both solid-state and hard-drive recording media.
‘This will not only give them the experience that employers are looking for, but give them a unique perspective of how changes in the digital age have transformed the storytelling process,’ said Wald.
‘Given a bit of training, many people can create beautiful images; we want students who have something to say, who are keen to develop their own unique visual vocabulary, and who believe in the value of collaboration.’
With industry footing and real world understanding of the global independent film economy, IFSS arms graduates with the skills needed to succeed beyond class, with several IFSS graduates who have gone on to achieve great success in their post-study endeavors.
‘Our cinematography students frequently go straight from the program into work of many different kinds,’ said Wald. ‘IFSS graduates have shot multiple feature films, as well as countless television commercials, corporate videos, and music videos. And they’ve done it all over the world – from Australia to New Zealand to the US to Spain.’
A purpose-designed and flexible working environment at IFSS have taken collaboration and immersion that extra step further giving IFSS students the opportunity to cast from campus, with a number of productions created during the course.
‘We take students much further than becoming capable cinematographers,’ said Wald. ‘We do this by having strong course co-ordination, teachers of great experience both in Australia and overseas, also by a deep theoretical exploration of present and past cinematography work so our students attain a deep understanding of the underlying processes that go into making a great film.’
