Located on King Street in Melbourne’s CBD, the Victorian incantation of AIM resides in a 3000 square metre building, purpose-built for musical and performative learning. The campus centres lecture rooms, classrooms, ensemble and rehearsal spaces, and state-of-the art music production suites around a three-story concert hall, dubbed the Peter Calvo Auditorium in tribute to AIM’s founder.
Running from 10am to 3pm on 18 January 2014, the Melbourne Open Day is the first time AIM’s new Melbourne campus has been open to the public. AIM’s Dean, Professor Ian Bofinger, encourages all prospective students to attend.
‘(Prospective students can) come and look at the building, talk to the staff, acquaint themselves with what they are going to be entering in to, talk about the industry, (and) have a look at the facilities,’ said Bofinger.
Diploma or Bachelor of Music courses in Contemporary Performance, Diploma or Bachelor of Music courses in Composition and Music Production, and a Bachelor of Music course in Entertainment and Arts Management are currently programmed to run through AIM Melbourne in 2014. All courses are taught by up-to-date industry active instructors, many of whom will be in attendance at the event.
The AIM Melbourne Open Day will be ground zero for collecting information on these music courses, and will also provide attendees the opportunity to view AIM facilities and programming firsthand. ‘All the rooms will be open. There’ll be performances running throughout the day, and we’ll have number of academic staff and students, and service staff down there to help people with their enquiries,’ said Bofinger.
A variety of interactive sessions have been scheduled for the day, with visitors encouraged to participate. These sessions include guitar, voice, drums, keys, bass and music production workshops and masterclasses, and a special vocal workshop with Darren Percival.
A number of talks will also run through the day, including ‘A Day in the Life of a TV Composer’, a panel discussion on the current music industry, and discussions on career and study opportunities at AIM.
For those curious about the kind of talent AIM fosters, there will be live performances from singer and acoustic guitarist Sam Westphalen, a 2013 graduate of AIM, and a Big Band performance with special guests.
Applications are currently open for enrolment in AIM, an organisation fast developing a reputation as Australia’s leading independent higher learning provider for the contemporary music industry.
