An artist exploring space through ambitious and immersive installations.

Angus Muir is Co-Director of Out of the Dark, alongside Alexandra Heaney. Out of the Dark is an Auckland-based company that specialises in creative solutions and treatments of space. This is manifested through design, installation and place-making.

Muir and Heaney, along with Simon vaan Praag of Fresh Concept, are the team behind FIELD, a surrealist field of 324 mirror faces to be installed Hyde Park as part of Art & About Sydney.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I have always had a love of design and making things from before I could walk. I always wanted to be making things.

When did you know you would work in the arts?

When I was 13.

How would you describe your work to a complete stranger?

Our work celebrates space and design with an emphasis on creating beautiful objects and immersive experiences.

Is there a mission to your work?

Celebrating space, through design installation and place-making.

What’s the first thing career related you usually do each day?

Check my emails.

What’s the one thing – piece of equipment, toy, security blanket, – you can’t work without?

Laptop, iphone and cordless drill.

What gets you fired up?

Alexandra and I both have a slight obsession for things needing to be lined up. If it’s off centre or not totally vertical it drives us nuts!

What are the top three skills you need in this industry?

Motivated, friendly, creative.

How do you know when you missed the mark?

You can’t see it.

Where do you plan to be in three years time?

Working on exciting projects worldwide, with a talented team for a variety of interesting clients.

Muir’s collaborative work FIELD, will be exhibited in the City of Sydney’s public art festival Art & About Sydney, which will run through Sydney from 20 September to 20 October.
