2012 was a banner year for Carriageworks, the multi-disciplinary, multi-venue art centre located in Sydney’s Redfern Waterloo precinct at the old Eveleigh Rail Yards. Visitors doubled during the year to 220,000, or roughly the population Hobart.

‘Carriageworks is a contemporary multi-arts centre,’ said Lisa Havilah, its director. ‘We develop a program across multiple disciplines, which means we work across contemporary dance, music, visual arts, and performance. We are very focused in our artistic direction and the work that we commission and present. We want to engage communities, but also reflect the cultural demographic of Sydney. So we support artists and present work from across Asia and the Pacific, but we also have a strong commitment to contemporary urban Aboriginal practice, because of our location in Redfern.’
