Swedish artist Lars Vilks received death threats after his cartoon depicting the Prophet Mohammed as a dog was published in the Swedish newspaper Nerikes Allehanda in 2007. Despite the threats and protests, Vilks is certainly not shying away from further depictions of the Prophet, having recently announced that his upcoming exhibition in the city of Malmo will feature the Prophet’s head on the body of a dog inserted into famous works of art by Claude Monet, Peter Paul Rubens and Anders Zorn.
‘It’s important to continue because if you yield to the threats and back away, you have abandoned the democratic principle,’ Vilks told AFP.
