Dutch arts groups shut down as funding vanishes

Two dozen cultural institutions across the Netherlands have been forced to shut down after being hit hard with funding cuts.

Dance companies, orchestras, nonprofit art galleries and theatrical companies are among the many Dutch art groups closing their doors due to lack of funding. Despite once having a rich cultural heritage, the 2008 financial crisis hit Holland hard and a mounting vendetta against cultural and artistic spending was launched.

During the last two years, a conservative government took charge and proceeded to implement severe funding cuts to arts and culture organisations across the country. From 1 January this year, federal financing for the arts has dropped 22% while regional, provincial and local governments have cut their art spending by 10 to 20%. The effect this has had on the arts is devastating
