Dance companies, orchestras, nonprofit art galleries and theatrical companies are among the many Dutch art groups closing their doors due to lack of funding. Despite once having a rich cultural heritage, the 2008 financial crisis hit Holland hard and a mounting vendetta against cultural and artistic spending was launched.
During the last two years, a conservative government took charge and proceeded to implement severe funding cuts to arts and culture organisations across the country. From 1 January this year, federal financing for the arts has dropped 22% while regional, provincial and local governments have cut their art spending by 10 to 20%.
