On February 2, 1933 retired solicitor René Lancelin found his home in Le Mans, France locked from the inside. Apart from a candle burning in the room belonging to the maids, sisters Christine and Léa Papin, there was no sign of life. His wife and daughter were supposed to have joined him for dinner. With no sign of them, he went to the police.
