Brett Sheehy: from foyers to festivals

Melbourne Festival Artistic Director, Brett Sheehy began working in the arts by writing reviews of plays. Hanging around theatre foyers immersed him in the arts industry and became the stepping stone for what has become a long and illustrious career.

It’s 1975. Volkswagen introduces the Golf, the United States Attorney General John N. Mitchell is found guilty of the Watergate cover-up, and the Balibo Five are killed by Indonesian troops in East Timor. It’s also International Women’s Year.

In celebration of all this, Brisbane schoolboy Brett Sheehy decided to honour the fairer sex in his final school project. “Me and [my] mate kind of created this mini festival,” Sheehy recalls with a laugh. “I don’t know why because we were at an all boys school.”
