Don’t ‘waffle’

Whether it’s in your CV, your cover letter, your responses to selection criteria or an interview: try not to waffle. When there are lots of applications to get through, anything that makes it seem more difficult to read and understand your application will create a negative response in the prospective employer’s mind. They want the information to jump out at them.

You need to stay focused on what the potential employer is looking for and wants to know. It’s common to become flustered with nerves but it will be distracting if your answers go off on tangents or include irrelevant details. Keep your answers succinct and relevant to the questions. If you don’t understand what’s being asked or are unsure, most advertised positions list a contact for further information, don’t be afraid to seek clarification and ask questions.
