Alison Bice – My Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Life: Melbourne International Comedy Festival
Crammed into another tiny room to see some comedy, this time in the Trades Hall – this time the room was almost too close for comfort and even a little stuffy.
After a rather grand introduction out walked a very, dare I say it, cute blond and rather sweet young lady. As they say appearances can be deceiving and behind Alison Bice’s veil of cuteness lays a comedian who is a deep thinker and seems to have a rather unusual thought process.
Alison is not a lesbian – much to the contrary infatuation on the part of expecting audience, she was even engaged to a man – yes gender confirmed – for a wee while just to prove the point!
Funny as this expectation may seem, and good looks to boot Alison’s terrible life story – My Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Life part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival – makes it evident that she’s learnt to see the funny side of a ‘horrible, no good, very bad life’ – but heaven help her mother, should her laminator break down and Alison hits the big time.
Her show was easy to watch and although the air was thick I quite happily sat back and enjoyed her historical story unfold before my eyes.
Alison’s jokes initially seemed to be quite light hearted but once thought about tended to have a deeper meaning and I found myself laughing again once the joke had passed. The visual image of what happen to her in a London flat still leaves my cheeks flushed with embarrassment for her.
Alison is a great start-up comedian exercising a few different styles while she discovers her true comedic self expression. There are often glimpses of her own individual style and they are perhaps the best parts of her show. I am looking forward to watching Alison develop her comedic career over the next few years and I am sure her own unusual experiences will only add flavour to her shows in the future.
Support an Aussie in dire need of mental stabilisation and check her show out at the trades hall.
