Adelaide Fringe Festival: A dingo stole my latte

Showing upstairs at the Duke Of York in central Adelaide this venue is spacious with comfortable seating but it was rather stuffy inside even though it was a beautiful evening. Nevertheless, the atmosphere was relaxed and once the show began we realised we were in for many quick, witty and sometimes very politically incorrect jokes.

The show is delivered by three comedians. Craig “Killa” Zee is a borderline personality, with a drinking problem and a law degree who has a fresh funk style of comedy that upsets his mother but pleases the masses. Phil Denson who the character Side Show Bob was based on [little known fact… Google it] sings his own melodies and Scotty McGowan is a Green Faces National Finalist 2008. All three are from Darwin and don’t mind poking fun at the Territorians as well as Adelaide-ians.

First on state is Craig who covers all areas from living in the Territory, visiting Adelaide and its surrounding suburbs, to his unconventional life with a family and his day job in a psychiatric hospital. Whilst he did involve the audience in his routine, I think this occasionally threw him off course and he lost his train of thought, he was however quick to recover and got on with the show. I am no stranger to bad language; however I do feel as though the ‘F’ word was overused.

Next on stage was Phil. A redheaded, dreadlocked, guitar playing funny man. I particularly enjoyed his (obviously) self written songs with their hysterical lyrics. The topics he covered are certainly not for the faint-hearted and most definitely not for children as the family in the back row realised. He sings about falling in love with a transsexual, his failed romances and what would happen if men suddenly developed female traits! This routine is so wrong in so many ways.

Scotty is the third very entertaining comedian on stage. He pokes fun at just about anyone and anything, including himself. Again, this routine pushes the boundaries as the jokes touch on sensitive issues including terrorism. If you can get past this, there are many other hilarious topics.

Overall, a very enjoyable evening with lots of laughs. The language and the topics can be coarse but this is mostly keeping with the theme and feel of the material.

The season of Adelaide Fringe Festival: A dingo stole my latte is at the Duke Of York hotel and runs until 22 March and tickets range from $17.75 for concession to $20.75 show only to $30.75 for show and meal.
