One of the best ways to see fresh and dynamic talent is to see a Year 12 graduating art show. These are currently being held around the country – namely at the Art Gallery of NSW, Wollongong City Gallery, the Art Gallery of Western Australia and the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston, Tasmania. In fact, the Art Gallery of NSW has a fantastic Teacher/Student program to coincide with ArtExpress which includes Student Study Mornings, and a Teachers’ Day with Bill Henson. As teachers around the nation start dragging themselves back to their classrooms after a long summer break, this is certainly a good time to start collecting resources together. For all you Art Teachers, The Australian Institute of Art Education is probably your first port of call (www.aiae.org.au). It’s a great place to find out what conferences are coming up in the year – two of which are Art in Early Childhood (July 7 -9, Roehampton University London) and The Transforming of Aesthetics (July 8 -9, Art Gallery NSW), which will explore the response of aesthetic theory to new forms of art and exhibition practice. The AIAE is useful also for finding online resources, but there are also a number of Educational Suppliers who specialise in art resources. Zart Art is one of the best around (www.zartart.com.au), as are Deans Art Supplies in Melbourne (www.deansart.com.au/schools), the Oxlade Brothers in Brisbane (www.oxlade.com.au) and Holding Educational Aids in Sydney (tel: 02 8786 4500). These suppliers will often have specialist art buyers who can help you find the best resources for your syllabus.
Well, from where I write the Sydney Festival is sadly drawing to a close – the controversial ‘disco ball’ will be soon be taken down from the bridge and the Domain stage packed away for another year. But around the country other festivals are opening up to keep the summer buzz alive. Firstly there’s the fantastic Perth International Arts Festival from the 11th February to the 6th of March – I have included the Visual Arts events in the Western Australian section below, but you can view the entire program at www.perthfestival.com.au. And secondly there’s the 2005 National Multicultural Festival which sounds so great I am tempted to make a trip to our nation’s capital very soon (despite having just been there for the Vivienne Westwood show). The list of Visual Arts events is huge (http://www.multiculturalfestival.com.au/2005natg.htm) but I think I’ll definitely be stopping by the Persian Arts Centre to see their bazaar-themed exhibition, and I’ll be popping into the Mexican embassy to see Ricardo Maldonado Garduno’s photographic exploration of The Passion parades held in Mexico City every year. Who needs to head overseas when you can find it all in Canberra!
